My Ah-Ha moment

February 16th, 2009

I signed up for the Savvy Mompreneurs Telesummit this past week. What pushed me to sign up were two comments that was made in the preview call.

One comment had to do with the fact that we Mompreneurs have different needs and different motivations AND we need to be OK with that. If our motivation is to make money to send our kids to the best school and NOT buy the fancy car or clothes..that’s OK. Wow!

The other comment was that instead of looking for balance between your business and your family…how about achieving a RHYTHM that works for you? Wow again! Balance to me was akin to climbing Mt Everest, a near impossible task. I usually feel that I am either not spending enough time with the kids or I’m not spending enough time on my business. Never finding that “sweet spot”.  But finding my rhythm sounds to me more achievable…it’s flexible.  I like flexible.

It’s easy to forget that you have the power to give yourself permission to live life on your terms.

My Addiction

February 10th, 2009

OK…I give up. I’ll admit. I’m a Twitter addict. Didn’t mean to. Just wanted to check out what all the buzz was and just like that… boom! I’m addicted.

I’m one busy gal. And because of this I’m not an early adapter. I like to see where the thing/product/service is going before time is invested. That’s how it was with Twitter. Even when I decided to jump in and participate, I was skeptical. But now…don’t know if I could live without it.

Twitter is great for building connections and sharing wisdom, but it’s also a fantastic learning tool.

My VA business depends on me keeping up with the latest trends and technology. It can get overwhelming, there are a lot of systems and services out there for business people to use for business growth. My clients depend on me to know what’s going on and how it relates to them. That’s why I find Twitter invaluable! I follow people who follow me (and there are a lot of people out there who have valuable things to say) and I also make it a point to follow not only the people who are trendsetters within my world, but also some people who would be considered “out of the box”.

There is a lot of noise on Twitter…learn to block it out. Where else can you read what  Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, Robert Scoble, Mari Smith and all the other smart/opinionated trendsetters’ that make up the Twitter community are saying AND join the conversation? Very cool!

Laws of Motherhood

February 6th, 2009

This week was excruciatingly busy. It dawned on me, like Newton’s The Universal Law of Gravity or Three Laws of Motion, there are the fixed Laws of Motherhood.  The first one being “Your child’s level of neediness is in direct proportion to how slammed you are”.

Breathe deep, exhale and I love my children, I love my children…

Peace Out!

Rat Race vs Kiddie Race

February 2nd, 2009

It use to be back in the day that on Monday morning I’d shoot out of bed, get ready for work, spend an hour in traffic and work for 8 – 9 hours, race home and my schedule would be like that the whole week. By Friday, I was exhausted and not looking forward to my weekend job of getting caught up with everything at home.

Today it’s the kiddie race. On Monday morning I still shoot out of bed, but now I’m getting 2 girls ready for school, making lunches, ensuring that they have their teeth and hair brush; while I quickly check email to see what kind of day I’ll be having. We usually get out the door with seconds to spare and get to school before the bell rings. Like I did with my work commute, I still try and time my drive so that I arrive at school either before or after the mass drop off time and the snarl of minivan traffic becomes untenable.

Then there is the nightly come home and do homework off to karate/dance/Girl Scouts back home to quickly cook dinner marathon.

I was feeling annoyed this morning, thinking I hadn’t really escaped “the race”, then realized the difference between the two races is that I’m running this one for myself and for the people most important to me (myself, family and clients), not some faceless corporate board who has no idea who I am. My exhaustion is the good kind, the I made a difference this week and did something that contributes to a better world (in the form of well behaved, much loved and ultimately good global citizens).
